From A SKETCH OF THE PIONEER SIMON HAY AND HIS TEN CHILDREN. This brochure gives complete information on this family, all the children, Hay's Mill, and Simon Hay's WILL.

"Simon Hay was born at Zewi Brucken (meaning two bridges) in Gemany, near the border of France, on the 18th of April 1742 and died 3 Feb1842 at the age of 99 years, 9 months and 15 days. He married Anna Marie Shaver of near Hagerstown, MD. She died in the stone house in the village of Hay's Mill PA on 19 March 1818, aged 63 years, 3 months and 6 days"

On September 4, 1784, Pioneer Hay was warranted a tract of land containing over 500 acres in Brothersvalley Township, now the home of Edison M. Hay and the E.E. Boger farms. Simon Hay improved over 1000 acres of land in Brothersvalley Township. He built the stone house in Hay's Mill in 1796, which is still standing and in good condition. The first grist mill was built before 1800, and was later used as a filling and carding mill. The second grist mill was built in 1806 and continued operations for 100 years until 1916.

The Pittsburgh Historical Society considers Hay's Mill one of the outstanding buildings of Western Pennsylvania. In the Museum of Philadelphia is the old loom of Simon Hay with the date 1774. These buildings are the oldest buildings in existence connected with the Hay family. The fulling and carding mill has long since disappeared.

The assessment of Brothersvalley Township in 1796 states that Simon Hay owned 500 acres of land, 41 acres of which were cleared. He owned two horses, two cows, a house and a grist mill, and was the third largest taxpayer in the Township.

Simon Hay was over six feet tall, strong and heavy built.

Simon Hay, one of the pioneers of this county, was born in Germany in 1742. He emigrated to America in 1763, and settled in Brother’s Valley, where he died in 1841. He built a gristmill and a large fish-pond where Baker’s mill now is. The names of his children were: Jacob, Michael, George, Peter, Valentine, Elizabeth (Weller), Catharine (Miller) and Susan (Baker).

George, who was born in this township in 1782, was a farmer and manufacture. He died in 1845. He married Mary Countryman, and was the father of Simon, living; Benjamin, deceased; John and William, living; George, deceased; Harry, living; Herman, Jacob, Elizabeth (Hoyman) and Harriet (Shoemaker), deceased; Mary A. (Braugher), living.

Simon, born in 1807, succeeded his father on the farm. He is still living with his son, Benjamin, to whom he sold the property in 1882. Benjamin served in the late war in Co. F, 142d regt. Penn. Vols.; was taken prisoner at Gettysburg; wounded at Gettysburg, Hatcher’s Run and Five Forks.
