Notes for Jeremiah Butler Shaffer
Shaffer, Butler Jeremiah
1924 - 2018
Butler Jeremiah Shaffer (Jere) passed away peacefully on November 24, 2018 at Dublin Methodist Hospital at the age of 94. He is preceded in death by his parents Harry and Anne Shaffer, brother Harry Jr., sister Jane Hendrickson and his beloved Wife of 62 years, Margaret Mary. He is survived by his loving children, Jeremy (Pam), David, Margy (Everett), and Wesley (Lana). Dearest Grandfather of Donald Jeremiah (DJ), Aaron and Colin. Jere was orphaned at age 13 and lived in many foster homes and orphanages throughout his formative years. He volunteered for WWII and enlisted in the
Army Air Corps. Through hard work and dedication, he was promoted to Captain as a Test Pilot for the XB-32 and commanded a flight crew during the rest of the war. After his service to his country Jere's entrepreneurial spirit took off. He started many successful businesses - including: crop-dusting, authoring and publishing one of the Midwest's first sporting magazine along with many other successful sales ventures. Jere ultimately landed in the plate glass business – which would be his focus for the remainder of his career. Jere created and lead many successful glass fabrication businesses in his lifetime. Jere was a visionary leader in the glass fabrication industry. Jere is credited with revolutionizing the process of mass producing entryway, decorative and stained-glass windows in the United States. Jere always believed people were good at heart and deserved a second chance. He always tried to employ people that needed this second chance. Although he often worked up to 18 hours a day, he made it a priority to spend quality time with his family. He was an active Mason and a big supporter of orphaned and foster children contributing his time and devotion to the United Methodist Children's Home in Worthington. Jere's hobbies were flying his plane, snow skiing, fishing, hunting and Ohio State Football; all of which he enjoyed with his family. After his successful business career, Jere and Marge retired to the coast of North Carolina where they enjoyed spending time together exploring or just relaxing on the beach. Jere and Marge always welcomed family and friends to visit their nirvana in NC. Jere Shaffer was the genuine article as a family man, business leader and a friend to all. Jere will be greatly missed by his family and everyone who had the great fortune of knowing him. Jere will be reunited with the love of his life – Marge in heaven. May he rest in peace. A private family gathering will be held at a later date.
