Notes for John Henry Drury

John Drury, a cherished family man, respected physical therapist, and committed community advocate, passed away peacefully on June 12, 2025, at St. Luke’s Miners Memorial Hospital in Coaldale, PA. Born on March 29, 1932, in Philadelphia, PA, a son to John and Ellen (Neumann) Drury Sr., John's life was a testament to his enduring dedication to his loved ones and the community that he so dearly improved through his tireless efforts.
John's journey began in the heart of Philadelphia, where he was raised with a strong sense of purpose and community. After graduating from high school, he attended Temple University on a gymnastics scholarship. After receiving a Bachelor of Science in Education, he honorably served his country in the US Army. When his 2 year stint in the army was over, he attended the Cleveland Clinic, where he earned a degree in Physical Therapy. This education paved the way for a career that would touch the lives of countless individuals.
Professionally, John was known for his hands-on approach and his unwavering commitment to patient care. As a physical therapist, he dedicated his life to helping others regain their strength and mobility.
Beyond his professional endeavors, John was a key figure in the revitalization of Jim Thorpe, PA. His vision, determination and boundless energy earned him many accolades and the deep respect of his community.
He founded the Mauch Chunk Museum, was a member of the Kemmerer Park Board, past president of the Jim Thorpe Commerce Association, member of the Jim Thorpe Lions Club, as well as executive director of the Switchback Gravity Railroad Foundation. In 2002, he was named one of Mauch Chunk Trust Company’s Community Heros. His passion to help those less fortunate drove him to become an integral part of Carbon County Chapter of Family Promise- which provides shelter for local families in need.
John's legacy is lovingly carried on by his family, including his sons David and wife Mary Ann of Jim Thorpe, Dale and wife Lynn of Jenkintown, and Mark and wife Lisa of Ephrata. He was a guiding light to his sister Elizabeth Rebl of Summerville, SC. His role as a grandfather to ten grandchildren and a great-grandfather to six, with two more on the way, brought him immeasurable joy and pride.
John was predeceased by his beloved wife, Janet Drury, who passed away in May of 2023. Together, they shared a life full of love, laughter, and shared dreams. The void left by his passing is felt deeply by all who knew him, yet his spirit will continue to inspire those he has left behind.
As we bid farewell to John Drury, we celebrate a life lived with purpose and love. His legacy of kindness, philanthropy, and community service will continue to influence and shape the town of Jim Thorpe and beyond for generations to come. John's memory will be cherished and kept alive in the hearts of his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A Celebration of Life for both John and Janet will be held on Thursday July 17, 2025 beginning at 12pm, in The Mauch Chunk Museum and Cultural Center, 41 West Broadway, Jim Thorpe.
